Sustainable Forestry
California's forests have made headlines for the last decade as wildfire, pests, and climate change threaten their viability. With approximately 52,000 acres of commercial timberland on the PG&E Watershed Lands, the Stewardship Council recommended donations that would further the research and demonstration capabilities of key forest managers and supported projects that improved the health of forests.
All of the forested Watershed Lands were protected by a conservation easement or covenant that allow the forests to be managed sustainably. The Stewardship Council defined sustainable forestry as "the practice of managing dynamic forest ecosystems to provide ecological, economic, social, and cultural benefits for present and future generations.”
US Forest Service received 4,500 acres
